Since 2013, IGA grocers have benefited from a personalized consulting service that helps them to optimize waste management in their stores. This program was made possible by the Fonds Éco IGA.
The Action/Reduction® certification is available to grocers that are interested in obtaining it. The 6-level program centres around continuous improvement and is based on various criteria. The store certification is valid for 2 years and must be upgraded to the next level to be renewed (certain conditions may apply). Stores that make food donations will receive a “+” next to their certification.
The certification is based on four criteria:
Commitment
to using the continuous improvement tools;
Existing waste collection methods
—in grocery stores, waste collection methods are different from those available for households. They include recyclable and compostable materials, as well as fats and bones, used cooking oils, cardboard, plastic films, polystyrene, and food donations;
The recovery rate
represents the share of waste diverted from landfill through recovery, thanks to the implementation of collection methods. The higher the diversion rate, the less material is sent to landfill;
Food donations
help stores reduce the amount of material sent to disposal, thereby increasing their diversion rate.
